g1.dat missing in steam copy of RCT classic

Recommended Posts

Hey I need some help.

I searched the forums and the subreddit but didn't find anyone with a solution for my particular problem.

So I bought RollerCoasterTycoon Classic on steam and it works fine.  I have played a few hours with no probs

http://store.steampowered.com/news/?appids=683900

but I found OpenRCT2 and thought it would be nice to have some extra features and so on.

I was led to believe by the steam site that RCT classic is RCT1 & RCT2... but I am starting to think that it is just RCT1 with some of the maps from RCT2...

I Dl'd the latest version and tried installing it.  Seemed ok and ran the OpenRCT2 link.  It asked to be pointed to the RCT2 folder, which is in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic", so I did.

It returned an error saying that g1.dat is not found.

I searched for a g1.dat and there isn't one on my machine (i'm guessing it's locked in a .cab file or has been removed by the update team maybe?), so I looked for help online and found only a guide to opening a cab file for a Mac user but that was using the original CD.  All the other requests for help ended with no result or the OP stating they fixed it but not stating how that fix occured. :/

I'm using win8.1, all drivers and updates are the most recent ones.

Hope someone has a fix!  Also hoping that RCT Classic hasn't broken/changed the RCT core files too much and is now incompatible with OpenRCT... :|

RCTC uses different file extensions and different save formats in many cases, so it's possible that the file is called something else and/or is located in a different directory (I don't have RCTC so I don't know if that's the case here).  As I understand it, OpenRCT2 should be able to load assets from RCTC but not scenarios.

It's the other way around, RCTC is an RCT2 port with some of the maps from RCT1. It doesn't contain RCT1 assets nor any RCT1 features except for the boosters (which are also implemented in OpenRCT2).
