I downloaded RCT1, and the file is called RCT.EXE. It isn't playing on OpenRCT2. Where do I need to put the file? (I am on OS X Sierra.)

You need RCT2...

RCT1 doesn't work with ORCT2.

OpenRCT2 requires RCT2, not RCT1.  You should point it at the directory which contains the rct2.exe executable and the subdirectories "Data" and "ObjData". The "Data" folder should contain the file "g1.dat" and several files of the form "css<number>.dat", and the ObjData folder should contain a large number of DAT files with names in all caps.
